Capt Waterhouse, Ens Drayok & Ens Drummond - "Dripping From a Dead Dog's Eye"

Mission: Whiskey in the Jar

Amelia emerged from the jefferies tube into the cargo bay and did a visual sweep. There were more shadows than she liked due only having emergency lighting, but there had been no mention of boarders when she'd been talking to sh'Teris, so standard diligence should be sufficient. She still moved cautiously as she cleared the way to allow the others to exit the jefferies tube, her eyes continuing to sweep over the shadows that clung to storage containers and shelves along the bulkheads. The spore drive was secured to a pallet, sitting next to a containment field generator that should have been casting a soft blue glow around the drive and on the surrounding areas — it was instead dark and silent.

Tory followed, moving more lithely than its blocky polygonal body would suggest. It took in the room without visibly looking around, the sensors on its mobile emitter scanning silently.

"Containment field is down. Should I check the generator, Captain?"

"Please." Amelia watched Tory, a frown pulling at her lips. She wanted to ask it how it felt, what had happened down in the vault, but Tory was acting normal enough by its standards, and that drive at the other end of the cargo bay posed a threat to the ship. She'd have to wait. Behind her, Sienna set the kit she'd assembled in R&D down on the cargo bay deck, then climbed out of the tube.

"The secondary power generator was supposed to kick in when the EPS grid shut down," Sienna explained as she picked up the kit and started across the bay towards the drive.

Fen had to admit they were having fun with this Mr Fantastic configuration, this kind of thing wasn't normally Fen's cup of tea, but it was making crawling through a jefferies tube more fun than it might otherwise have been, a lot less effort too. They practically slid out of the hatch before standing up straight with a smile. Fen moved over to join the group around the spore drive, they crouched down by the secondary generator.

"Yeah, this is fried too," Fen said as they scanned the generator. "Looks like the power surged enough in here that it fried this unit before the containment field went out with the power."

"I'm going to need to overhaul the EPS system, again," Sienna muttered, pulling a tricorder out of the kit. She felt a little behind, with Fen and Tory just being able to look and evaluate what was going on. "Everything was brand new just four months ago, and one short attack is causing this much damage? What did those jokers at Utopia Planitia use when they did that overhaul, Tellarite Magnesium ribbon?" She clicked her tongue as the tricorder readout displayed the readings. She reached in to pop the panel off the side of the containment field generator, and her finger traced along one of the paths of wires until it tapped on one of the components. "The EPS tap was supposed to terminate its connection when it detected a surge."

"But can you fix it?" Amelia stood over the others, looking down at the open panel on the containment field generator.

"It didn't just fry the power inverter, it shorted the board and processor. If we had power, I'd just replicate new ones, but we're going to have to attempt to repair these. It might take us a minute — maybe you should go ahead to the bridge?" Sienna pulled the power inverter from the containment field generator.

Centurion stepped away. "You'll need to link the quantum grounding pin to the serial programmer," it said, a crowbar appearing in its hand, "And I'll get you a compatible processor." It jammed the tip of the crowbar between two pieces of deck plating and shoved. As it began extracting components from the holoprojector under the deck, it spoke again. "Detecting unusual tachyon levels, Captain."

"Tachyons?" Amelia scrunched her face as she looked at the spore drive. The drive had started to hum. "The drive's not hooked to any power, is it? It shouldn't be doing that."

Sienna turned from where she'd been pulling parts out of the containment field generator and quickly grabbed the tricorder from the deck. "There shouldn't be any mycelium spores in the drive, we scanned it before we secured it earlier but we have a spore bloom in progress. I, uh, I think the report called this a black alert?"

Amelia slapped her combadge, it chirped an error even as she spoke, "Waterhouse to sh–" The walls and other surfaces around the cargo bay appeared to drip liquid, droplets floating into the air for a brief moment before they fell to the deck and everything appeared as dry as it was before. "What the hell was that?" She shook her head. "I need communication with the bridge now."
