Personal History | Horan was born 10 years after the USS Voyager revived and left the 37s on the L-class planet in the Delta Quadrant. Contrary to belief, the revival of the remaining 37s put the planet into imbalance. Even though the residents of the planet had moved on to an ideal, rift-free society, not all of the 37s woken up from stasis shared this view. They still had the thirst for power, and they began forming power centres and groups. Horan's father, an engineer, saw the degradation of his society and was extremely disappointed. He told Horan stories passed on to him over generations - stories of how the Briori were overthrown by the 37s. His father had managed to befriend Nogami, who was equally bitter of the way things had gone since they were revived. Nogami told Horan how he with Horan's ancestor Deshmukh had formed a ragtag army with the slaves and overthrown the Briori. Horan was fascinated by the military parlance Nogami used, and was immensely proud of his ancestry in Deshmukh. Nogami told Horan how Deshmukh, Amelia Earhart and Nogami alongwith others had learnt to live and fight alongside each other. While Deshmukh had died in the fight, Nogami, Earhart and few others had been severely injured and put into stasis. He told Horan that to beat an enemy you should know him, and hence it was very important to have an understanding of other cultures. Horan is disappointed by the state of his homeworld, and he also is fascinated by the Starfleet - since they were able to put a 400-year old civilization into tumult in one visit. He wants to join it so he could stop it making from the same mistake it made on his homeworld. With Nogami's help, Horan manages to get a recommendation from an officer and appears for the prep exam. On jonining the Starfleet academy, he studied Earth History, Inter-species Ethics and Protocol and majored in Xenolinguistics. He also took a course in Basic hand-to-hand combat. |
